The way to address one's relatives in China
Modified By ChineseTime on 6/12/2012 3:32:11 PM)

The way to address one's relatives in China is quite complicated. It's varies according to one's age, gender, location, and whether it is the paternal or maternal side of the family, etc.

For example,"grandparents" in English should be called "yé ye"  and "nǎi nai " for one's father's father and mother, and "lǎo yé" and " lǎo lao" for one's mother's father and mother, while "wài gōng" and   "wài pó " for the latter in south of China.

Chinese people also addresses friends, colleagues, and neighbours in the ways similar to relatives in order to show close relationship and respect.

For example, people of about the same age call each other "xiōng "," dì","  jiě", or " mèi",

while they can someone who is similar in age to his parents "shū shu"or " ā yí ".

while they call someone who is similar in ago to his grandparents "yé ye" or "nǎi nai ".

"ā yí" is also a normal way to address "babysitter" or "housekeeper".
