Class act as pupils learn in Chinese in UK
Pupils will benefit from a new classroom designed to encourage them to learn about Chinese languages and culture.
Named after the renowned Eastern phil osopher, the Confucius Classroom at St Ninian’s High, Giffnock, is the first in East Renfrewshire.
It is designed to promote Chinese language and culture as a focal point for all East Renfrew shire Council schools as part of a joint project with Learning and Teaching Scotland.
The classroom is fitted with a computer fitted with a Chinese teaching program, DVDs, books and tapes.
Bernard McCleary, chief executive of Learn ing and Teaching Scotland, joined East Renfrewshire’s education vice-convener Elaine Green to declare the hub open.
Ellena Zhou, who has pioneered the teaching of Mandarin Chinese in St Ninian’s, Mearns Castle and Willamwood High schools, was also present to give the youngsters an insight into the world’s most spoken language.
Fourth year pupil Sophie Robertson, 15, said: “It’s a wonderful idea because it lets us get in touch with Chinese language and culture.”
Fellow pupil Wai Ling Tsang, 15, added: “It is important we have close ties with China, especially as trade links are closer and there may be jobs for young people.”
Teachers and pupils from the area’s schools will have the chance to use the resources at the classroom.
Head teacher John Docherty said: “We will be taking Chinese language and culture out to our primary schools and even into our nurseries.”
Councillor Green said: “Thanks to Learning and Teaching Scotland we have a resource that will be a focal point for Chinese at a time when promoting links with China and understanding its culture is more important than ever.”
Bernard McLeary, chief executive of Learn ing and Teaching Scotland, said: “Educ ating pupils about the world in which we live is pertinent to many subjects, from geography and foreign languages to literacy and religious education.
“It is only right that children in Scotland have the opportunity to widen their horizons for the future.”
