Jianguo 328 for Shanghainese Classics Shanghainese food is an underrated yet unique cuisine; and because of the influx of foreigners and migrant workers in this city, there aren’t as many genuine Shanghainese eateries as one might think.

Five years ago, in search of the homey cuisine, Taiwanese restaurateur Karen Chen (Vesta, Unagi) decided to open her own neighborhood restaurant, Jian Guo 328.

With help from a local chef, she offers Shanghainese classics made with quality oil, filtered water, and without MSG—a winning combination that keeps the eatery packed every day of the week. The menu is expansive and overwhelming, but, thankfully, dishes are listed in English and in Chinese.

Start with the yellow croaker spring rolls (RMB22), stuffed with greens, glass noodles and fresh, flaky croaker. The yellow fish with scallions (RMB58/5 pieces) is also a tasty option, but only for those comfortable with their fish being served whole.

Meat dishes abound, with “Shanghai Grandma” braised pork (RMB68) as the crown jewel. Undoubtedly the most recognized item in Shanghainese cooking, Jian Guo’s version of hongshaorou highlights the local affinity for sweet flavors without being cloying.

If you want something other than pork (blasphemy!), the deep-fried duck legs (RMB38) are perfectly salty and oh-so-crispy.

For veggies, try the bitter gourd sautéed with scrambled egg and salted egg (RMB28).

There are also “snacks” like the slightly sweet dates stuffed with glutinous rice (RMB28) and the scallion noodles (RMB18) served with a heavy helping of caramelized scallions. All are great.

While Shanghainese food may not be recognized as one of China’s great regional cuisines, Jian Guo 328 makes a strong case. The food is comforting and the service is friendly. Combined with the intimate low ceilings and shared tables, it’s almost like dining with family.
